The Invention of the Tractor

The Invention of the Tractor
Sam Feaster
Have you ever wondered how the food on your table gets there? The invention of the tractor has to be one of man kind’s greatest inventions, this being because the tractor is a vital part in getting the food out of the field, on to a truck, and to a food producer. The first tractor was a lawn tractor built by the Case Company, in the early 1840’s.  (casetractor.com) Tractors can be credited for making life easier for farmers and ranchers, they make it possible for food to get from the farm to the dinner table, its also a universal work horse that pull just about anything.
First off, the tractor was invented by John Froehlich, a blacksmith from Iowa; It was powered by a gasoline engine, not a diesel like most modern tractors. The tractor is the “unsung hero” of the farm. Many people carry out their daily lives without realizing the bread on their sandwich comes from the hard work of a tractor. Tractors can do anything from pull a grain cart, to operate an auger using its PTO (Power Take Off) shaft. Its is known as the universal work horse of the farm.(Encyclopedia.com)
Next, tractors aren’t only limited to life on the farm. They are used in residential areas as well. In residential areas they are outfitted with, scoops and dozers. They do this because they are often used to excavate lawns to install sprinkler systems, sewers lines and so much more. When there is 12 inches of snow on the ground it often up to a tractor to clear tighter residential areas where a bigger plow cannot be used.(todaystractors.com)
In addition, tractors can also be used to pull just about anything. They are geared very low, this gives them the ability to pull heavy things, while putting less strain on the engine. A tractor is often necessary to pull something that a pick up truck cannot. They can also pull attachments, such as mower decks, plows, vacuums, and composters. These attachments get the job done much faster than commercial equipment, since they are so much bigger.
Although tractors make farm and city life easy, they are also very easy to misuse. Many smaller tractors are not equipped with a roll cage. A roll cage is a sturdy cage, usually made of steel tubing that is designed to protect the operator in the event of a roll over. Bigger tractors that work in the field usually come standard with a roll cage, as well as an enclosed cab. Roll cages are a good idea because the most common type of tractor accident is a roll over. On average a tractor kills on American every three days, due to a roll over accident. Most farmers or companies that require work on a tractor, require their workers to have a tractor safety course. In conclusion, tractors may be one of the greatest inventions of all time, because of they ability to perform so many different tasks. They make life easier for everyone, even though it may not have a direct impact on every ones life we are all benefited by a tractors versatility. While they are very helpful they can also be very dangerous if one doesn’t have the proper training, or the know how to operate one. I think they are the greatest invention of all time because they have an impact on every ones life in some way, and they make it to where we don’t have so many people in the fields performing back breaking labor.
